![]() ![]() Of course I got in trouble for lying but I didn’t stop until fifth grade. I loved lying and getting away with it! There was something about telling the lie-story and seeing your friends’ eyes grow wide with wonder. Not “Once upon a time” stories but basically, outright lies. ![]() I loved and still love watching words flower into sentences and sentences blossom into stories. ![]() I chalked stories across sidewalks and penciled tiny tales in notebook margins. (It was not pretty for me when my mother found out.) I wrote on paper bags and my shoes and denim binders. I remember my uncle catching me writing my name in graffiti on the side of a building. I used to say I’d be a teacher or a lawyer or a hairdresser when I grew up but even as I said these things, I knew what made me happiest was writing. ![]()

There's some parts about the Jews that are hilarious. But Misha is such a moral relativist he hardly seems to care.So why did I give it even three stars? Well it reads like stand-up comedy sometimes. It turns out it's all about oil money and post-war contracting money. I fail to understand why I'm supposed to care about this make-believe country's ludicrous politics. I think Shteyngart is up to the task of a complex, humorous, political novel with real characters. Is it too much to ask for some character development in a political satire? I don't think so. The female characters are one-dimensional sex toys for the most part. His later lover Nana Nanabragovna doesn't need his money, so I guess were supposed to believe she using him for political reasons. Sure Rouenna his Latina lover from the Bronx is after his money, but she seems to genuinely like him too for no apparent reason. It follows the familiar ugly man only sleeps with beautiful women trope. Absurdistan protagonist, Misha Vainberg, is a rich, grotesquely obese Russian I found totally unlikeable. This book fell way short of my expectations after Super Sad True Love Story and Little Failure. ![]() ![]() Image copyright Juliana Perdomo, 2022, text copyright Danna Smith. However, this end was fantastic- there were so many twists and interesting premises that kept me close to my earbuds so I could find out what happened next. Well, I think it would have been better as a duet, to be honest, as there were areas that could have been cut out and a bit of repetition (I mean, how many times can the characters try to get back at each other by pretending to go out with someone else?). )Īh, this series- it was a great trilogy. How do they do that? awesome job!!!! This is part 3, and so it's worth finishing this story. HOWEVER, after the misunderstanding clears up, the story begins and develops into something worth listening. I personally don't like books with obvious misunderstandings.
